PAYING HOMAGE

Feel the need to bring some culture into my bloggie doggies. Class. Doggie Delights. Aroma for your eyes.Thrills to your very bones. I was inspired to create a masterpiece. A work of art. Every year the Royal Academy in London holds a painting exhibition inviting entries from both amateurs and professionals. It's the largest contemporary Art show in the whole world. Pawfect opportunity for me to have a go at painting.

Would be Art Critics out there. Are you suprised? I do have a creative side in my Square Head you know. Located upper left side to be precise. Mommi has been hugely influential in developing my cultural interest with her vast library of art books.

Plus I've spent many an afternoon at the library. Staring vacantly into space. Or. Pondering. If fur is in or out for autumn (what will I do if it's out?) How rabbit does his multiplying trick. Is Aire Ruby going to put flight prices up now aviation fuel is more expensive? What's the value of my dog crate now house prices are falling? Am I barking loud enough for Jackson? Wishing enough on the dog star? All the important things in life to ponder on.

But back to my masterpiece. My field of study for inspiration was Cubism and Bauhaus. That's how I came across my favourite artist, Josef Albers. You can read about Josef here. He was a founder member of the Bauhaus (pronounced Bow Wow House) artists movement.

You might not know this but Josef is most Famous for his Famous paintings. A whole series of them in assorted colours. Hundreds of them. In one shape only. All devoted to one subject. ME. ME. ME. And some of you too. He called this painting collection of his HOMAGE TO THE SQUARE. You can see them if you use the link. Now bet you thought I was telling porkies so let me show you some of them in Mommi's Square book. I'll look in the index for his name....Albers J...

found it. Now paw to the relevant pages . . .

to show you. Here they are . . .

Homage to the Square.

Aren't they terrierific? For my own painting I pondered. Perused. Decided to simply pay Homage to Homage to The Square paintings. Painted my own Homage Square. In homage. It's a bittie bit odd paying homage to your homage in homage. Still with me aren't you? Because I'm hoping you'll be a-blogging impressed with my painting. I've dedicated my "A Square in Homage to a Square" to my fellow Square pal Jackson. I know we will all be barking, wishing on the dogstar, reciting and put out the prayer flags even more for Jackson and the J's this and next week.

A Square in Homage to a Square

For those of you unaccustomed to understanding art and the finer points of detail in my work I've copied the Royal Academy's critique for you.

Eric' s latest work "A Square in Homage to a Square" was one of this year's lead entries. The colour pawlette in his painting, to represent square dog markings, is reminiscent of the work of Dogas. Pee casso.Or Van Dog. And the use of a thing orange line to represent his collar was inspired. It was with real regret we had to bowwow out of using Eric's entry due to the shows title:- Man Made.

How dog-a-blogging prejudice is that? But I have plans. To show my work all over. Somewhere doggies will see it. Better than a gallery for 2 leggededs. You will see .

Now Hermes are celebrating Josef's life this month by printing Homage to the Squares onto their sumptuous silky scarves.

A Limited Edition of 200 world wide at only £1600 each, due for release in August. Asta it's our favourite orange one too!!! Wouldn't that be pawfect for this Square Dogs banana? And one for Mommi and Asta too. Wonder if they have counterf.. oops ... er..homage design ones on an well known auction site? At a little less. Please let me know if you see one. In the meantime I'll make do with this new banana of mine.

Don't you think I look Raffish? Arty? Or plain Crafty?

"A Square's Homage to Homage to a Square" by Eric Square.

Have you painted yourself into a corner? (Rolling on the floor at the sheer punnieness of it all.)

I need to send you a photo of a sign in our neighborhood for a new building. It's called "One Jackson Square!" Do you think our mentor is relocating? Could "One Eric Square" be far behind???

Your pal,

Eric...

What exactly have you been drinking...or maybe I should say what have you been smoking lately?
I am still trying to figure out why you are a Square Dog when you are really nicely rounded, delightfully furry and certainly lacking any sharp edges to prick the paw pads....and your brain has certainly grown and matured in all the right places too.....

I must say that you delight in the pursuit of looking rather colorful but the bright colors suit you well and bring out the sparkle in your eyes.....

Don't try so hard to be sophisticated...it can give you a big headache......and make you turn into one of those boxes in the paintings.....

Go out and get into the mud again but don't tell your Mom I said so...

kisses and wirey hugs,
Asta Marie, WFT

I know a thing or two about art, you know my preferred media is urine on carpet, but I must say I like this a lot. It really is hip to be square.

Oooo, J1 LOVES the Royal Academy show, particularly the way they squish all those paintings together. I see that Asta is disputing our squareness. Perhaps we are more rounded squares rather than square squares? And we're certainly never square in the fashion sense as demonstrated by your orange bandana! J x

This is a deep post, Eric! And very artistic too. Didn't know squares can be so profound! Thanks for the enlightenment!

Eric! Art is not really art until you pee on it! The urine helps to dilute colors and move them around in a more eye pleasing way.

That and there are interesting smells that could be put on art. I know I would be more interested in it, if there was pee art. Hehehee!

I think you are too sophisticated to be crafty! So, I think you look divine!

Slurp!

Oh my...I don't really know how to comment here. Um...first of all...the colors for your square art work were STEELER COLORS...AND PENGUIN COLORS AND PIRATE COLORS...Go Black and Gold!!!

Um...I don't think that's what you were thinkin' but one of the Pittsburgh dogs had to say it!

Perhaps I will try and do a pen and ink of a square dog...it could be interesting!

Oh Eric...you are quite a guy....stop over at Jackson's and visit us...we'll be commutin' to the vettie hospital for the first couple of days, but we'll be spendin' time at his house gettin' ready for his home coming!!!

barks....Laciegirl!

Brilliant!!! Eloquent!!! A tribute to the existential squareness of it all.

We have never felt so "us" as when you first introduced us to the concept of square dogitude and this takes it all to a new level.

How could we have been so remiss in not seeing your post sooner?

We bow humbly at your artistry and will throw poop at those who disqualified your entry just because it was Dog-made.

Time for a new Academy and new Annual Show???

Your two square pals,

Jake and Just Harry
